My 1st close encounter with art theft! RAGE!!

I am so irked right now! A few months ago I saw this beautiful rope bondage photo. It caught my eye and it was an immediate fav. A few days ago I joined fetlife and looked up a really sweet BDSM acquaintance of mine who does amazing rope bondage. He was the first guy to ever tie me in rope suspension and he's always a joy to talk to. I was looking through his photos when I recognized that bondage photo that was my favorite from a few months back. I was so excited because I hadn't known it was Charly. I went back to check and see how I could miss something so obvious! That's when I saw that the the dev "artist" didn't reference him. His mark was kinda faded in the upper right corner. I didn't want to panic. Maybe it was the model and she just didn't know or something, so I told Charly about it and gave him the link. I checked up on it a little later to see that Charly made an account here so he could tell the girl to reference him! So he didn't know this person! I was so upset for him! This has never happened to one of my friends before!

I checked her comments and other photos. She never references ANYTHING and she just lets people comment about how amazing her photos are without ever bothering to correct that they AREN'T HERS! I got PISSED! I never slam people on dev or really anywhere, but especially on the internet because I think it's cowardly but this was different. I posted in as polite a fashion as I could that anyone who appreciates the photo should remove it from their favs because it's not hers. I'm not going to say where she is because she does not deserve the recognition. I went to report the image when I realized they asked for a link to the original site. I didn't think they could get on fetlife, but I figured I would direct them to Charlys new account so they could verify with him. So closed it and went to get the link to report it and I saw Charlys now posting some photos! I was pleased to see he posted the one that was stolen called Lani and you can see it as HIS SITE at [link] Please have a look at his site as he is a wonderful and very talented man.

But I reported the image and suggested he do the same in case he didn't see the tiny little icon to report. I missed it the first time myself. But geeze people! If my art ever gets good enough to become theft worthy I'd be so angry! I work HARD to improve my art and I couldn't IMAGINE someone having the audacity to claim my hard work as their own! Why are people so horrible!!!??

I have had my art stolen it really does suck. not much that you can do about it. thats why I put a larger clearer water mark over most of my work any more and even then I find it on other site then DA. (myspace and such).

Yeah that sucks. I've had writing stolen in parts multiple times, or given writing I normally charge for free, only to left out of being credited, again multiple times, in print. Hell, I once found an entire website that was 80% my words, no credit. It happens. I tried to console myself when I first started writing (not really able to judge my own skill, per se) by saying that if someone were stealing it, then I must be doing it right. But that's not good enough. These people should be exposed, professionally and perhaps privately, but definitely dealt with. At least the perpetrator was caught.

Wow! I'm glad you found them! That completely sucks!

Sometimes I wonder if people just don't understand the importance of crediting the artist. But when people are saying how great something is with the impression that the thief did it and they say NOTHING to correct them, that's when I loose any sympathy. I have a pencil still life drawing in my gallery that was drawn from a photograph. I went back to the library to get the artists name when I was going to post it, but the book was gone. But I still say, it is from a photograph by an unknown artist! It's not so hard! I hope Deviant boots the person.

That's awful! You should report the person to whatever site they are posting on and have them banned if they don't acknowledge you!

I have had to do that a couple of times. most of the time people use pics with out knowing its other peoples art and if you ask they will take it down.
some one used a drawing of mine for an online magazine with out asking but they did link the work back to me. i was upset at first but then after thinking about it it can be flattering too. it used to really upset me thought.
